Data Visualization & Infographics

Working with data in the DEI space is a big responsibility. In the past, the world of data often has hasn’t represented marginalized communities well. The process of aggregation and reducing people to numbers makes it challenging to really know what we are working with. When I do this work, my goal is to make sure to elevate the people behind numbers, and to make sure, whenever possible, that no one is left out and all the questions are asked.

Data Viz for T.D. Jakes Foundation (TDJF)

As part of their reporting, TDJF needed to include data showing the impact their programs had on the people they served. I dispersed the most compelling data throughout the text, photos, and quotes for each grantee to support the story with data-driven evidence.

In the Strategic Plan, we included compelling nation-wide data (below) to support the “why" of TDJF and set the stage for the work they are planning to do over the next three years.

Data Visualizations for DEI Assessment surveys

For this project I worked with UPD Consulting who built an organization-wide survey to assess DEI in the workplace, and we wanted to highlight the demographics of the folks who responded the survey. Since there was so much data to absorb, catchy visuals were key.

Using PowerBI, we analyzed the survey responses. After analyzing the data from the survey, we worked to frame the story based on what the data was telling us. It was my job to familiarize myself with the data, and distill it down in a way that put a spotlight on the main points while also maintaining the integrity of the data.

There are people behind the numbers, and I wanted to make sure to get that across in all the data we showed. Doing equity work with data is a challenging process that often involves rethinking what we’ve been taught about data analysis in order to center the information around the people rather than the numbers.

Survey Reporting for a Public Sector Agency

We also wanted to demonstrate the disparities within leadership versus the rest of the staff, so I used the same graph but made small modifications to how I prioritized the data in order to accentuate the leadership gap.

Our work for this client was to help them understand how their staff numbers compared to the county they were in service of. We proposed that they attempt to get their demographics to be representative of their constituents. I created this series of graphs to show the differences between their internal staff and the county as a whole.

Baltimore City Public Schools Reopening Plan

The reopening plan for the entire BCPS school district was complex. It needed to convey a lot of information while also being digestible to parents, students, teachers and the community. I offset this by creating infographics for each page to summarize the content on the page. I also created one-pagers for each section which could be removed from the doc and used as easy to understand summaries.

I created custom icons which we used throughout the report for consistency.

Home for Good Research data

I was asked to design a research paper to show to potential funders for a proposed project to help keep BIPOC folks in their homes in gentrifying neighborhoods. We chose a few neighborhoods to highlight data that evidenced gentrification, and I created visuals around this data.
